Economic Empowerment Program
Alford's perspective of dealing with community problems is using the holistic approach. We look at economic hopelessness as one door through which communities are inflicted with problems and consequently unable to deal with them. Therefore through economic empowerment, community members are able to meet their day to day needs and hence are in position to deal with problems like nutrition, school fees, clothing and improved shelter. Emphasis is put on women to over the economic maladies of the families; This is because, when you give one dollar to the woman, you have given the whole family. ALFORD understand that when you support women, you are increasing the well being of the whole family.
Among activities to be carried out is business skills training, entrepreneurship skills development, Credit and savings facilities, income generation projects.
Humanitarian Aid / Relief Program
Over the past 23 years the people of Uganda (in the northern and some western, eastern and central districts) have been engulfed in a conflict that has resulted in massive internal displacement, abduction of thousand of children, death and the destruction of homes, villages, health units and schools. This conflict has broken down the very fabric of civil society.
People are living in constant fear. Traditional customs which used to bring communities together to discuss and solve problem and implement solution jointly are no longer followed. Safe protective family environment within which children should be developing no longer exist. Children have been forced to witness or participate in atrocities against their own communities and these are psychologically wounding events, but ones from which children and family can recover if given appropriate support to build on their natural resilience.
ALFORD in collaboration with Universal Canada promotes relief services to affected households, health centers and schools in form of basic needs, scholastic materials and medical equipment to these poor communities especially in Northern Uganda, Gulu, Lira and Apac district.
